SEE US, HEAR US PHOTOVOICE PROJECT

We are pleased to announce that the Grade 5/6 class at Migizi Wazisin Elementary and the Communications class at
Niimiki Migizi Secondary will be participating in a new community project beginning February 3, 2011.
See Us, Hear Us is a Photovoice project that will provides students with hands-on opportunities to learn and practice
life skills that include art, photography, activism, writing, communication, and marketing.
What is Photovoice?
Photovoice blends photography and social activism. It puts cameras in the hands of community youth so they can
share or express their community’s strengths, resources, problems, and potentials through images and stories.
Photovoice is about giving young people, whose voices are often ignored, hands-on experience with making a
difference in their community. There are three main goals to Photovoice. First, it provides young people with the
skills and opportunity to record and share their experiences and what they believe is important to their wellbeing.
Second, it encourages youth and their community members to talk about important issues through discussions about
the photographs. Third, it is about reaching policy makers and other individuals and groups who can help make a
difference.
How will it work with the Students?
Beginning February 3, 2011, students will dedicate class time on Thursdays, for a total period of 16 weeks, on the
See Us, Hear Us Photovoice Project. During this time, a Photovoice Facilitator, (accompanied by the teacher), will
work through the curriculum with the students. During the sessions, students will learn about topics related to
photography (camera techniques; ethics, safety and consent; creativity; photo editing), writing stories about their
images, how to plan photo exhibits, and media planning. Every student will have access to his or her own camera
every week. During certain weeks, students will participate in supervised group excursions out in the community so
they can practice and collect their photographs. At the end of the project, the class will host a photo exhibit of their
work in both the First Nations of Ginoogaming and Long Lake #58, and will invite their parents, family members,
community leaders, teachers, and elders to attend.
Project Partners
See Us, Hear Us is made possible through the collaborative effort of our school and the Dilico Children’s
Foundation. It is funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The Dilico Children’s Foundation was created in 2009
to provide life enriching experiences to Anishinabek children and youth living in northwestern Ontario. One of the
Foundation’s goals is to support the education and empowerment of Anishinabek youth and individuals so that they
have the skills and tools to get the support they need for projects that they identify as being important to their
community. See Us, Hear Us provides youth with new, creative, and impactful ways to express their issues, needs,
and potentials so that key individuals and groups will take notice and take action.
